What Caché Monitor was
Caché Monitor was positioned as the all-in-one tool for InterSystems Caché: like a Swiss army knife for the database, fast and easy to use. It combined a Server Navigator, a smart SQL editor, a Global Browser, a Class Navigator, database diagrams and the Query Cloud for SQL across servers, and it connected to Microsoft SQL Server, Access, MySQL and other databases as well.
The audience was Caché developers, administrators and data analysts. The design principle was familiarity: InterSystems terms throughout, and an interface concept inspired by Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio. The tool was written in Java and ran on Windows, macOS and Linux.

Timeline
- Early versions 0.11 to 0.5x. Built for Caché 5.2, 2007.1 and 2008.1 on Java 6: a Java JDBC client with a Server Navigator, process list, routine source view and a Query Analyzer with code completion and SQL history.
- 2011 to 2012: version 1.6x beta. Global Browser, Class Navigator, editions (free Home, Developer, Professional), SQL execution plans, HiDPI groundwork.
- June 2013: Caché Monitor 2.00. First stable release of the second generation. Table Browser, Data Inspector, Scripts Manager, database diagrams stored in the database, export to CSV, HTML, XLS, XLSX, XML, SQL, text and JSON.
- 2015: Windows setup and Java 8. Version 2.75 required Java 8, shipped as a comfortable Windows installer and added Windows authentication for SQL Server.
- March 2016: Query Cloud. Version 2.76 introduced the Query Cloud: one SQL statement across several Caché servers, namespaces, SQL gateway connections and CSV files.
- January 2017: version 2.81. Search bar in all grids, searching the SQL history, "Open in Excel", "Execute to file" with constant memory, table size calculation.
- December 2018: version 2.90. InterSystems IRIS JDBC driver added.
- August 2019: version 2.93. Native InterSystems IRIS support with Global Browser and all other Caché-specific features. Drivers for Caché 2009.1, 2010.1 and 2017.1 removed.
- January 2020: version 2.94. Private Java runtime bundled, no installed Java required.
- April 2020: version 2.96. IRIS 2020.1 driver, Query Cloud with IRIS support. Last release under the Caché Monitor name.
- 2021: renamed to SQL DATA LENS. Existing keys of qualifying licences kept working and the Navigator picked up registered Caché Monitor connections (notes for Caché Monitor users). The product continues with native IRIS and Caché support, more databases, secure connections, an AI assistant and current releases on sqldatalens.com. Part of Data Prudentia GmbH since 2026.

Frequently asked questions
When was Caché Monitor developed?
The release notes start with the early 0.x versions for Caché 5.2 and 2007.1, reach the first stable 2.00 release in June 2013 and end with 2.96 in April 2020. In 2021 the tool was renamed and development continues as SQL DATA LENS.
Why was the tool renamed?
InterSystems renamed its database from Caché to IRIS. A tool called Caché Monitor no longer described a product that connects to IRIS, SQL Server, PostgreSQL and many other databases, so it became SQL DATA LENS.
Who develops SQL DATA LENS?
SQL DATA LENS has been part of Data Prudentia GmbH, Mayen, Germany, since 2026. The product has been in development since 2010 according to its current website; the Caché Monitor release notes go back even further.
